In 2006, Dr. M. Karunanidhi led the Democratic Progressive Alliance to power on the back of historic populist promises, including free color televisions, rice at ₹2 per kg, and waiver of cooperative farm loans. The coalition won 163 seats. With DMK winning 96 seats (falling 22 seats short of single-party majority), Tamil Nadu witnessed its first minority government in modern history. The Congress (34 seats), PMK (18 seats), and Left parties (15 seats) extended outside support throughout the 5-year tenure without demanding cabinet berths.
