Political Context, Seat Bargaining & Legislative Impact (1991)
Following the dismissal of Karunanidhi's government by the Chandra Shekhar central ministry in January 1991, Tamil Nadu went to polls in June 1991. The tragic assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by LTTE suicide bombers in Sriperumbudur during the campaign created an overwhelming sympathy tsunami. The AIADMK-Congress alliance captured 224 seats, decimating the DMK-led National Front to just 3 seats (DMK won 2, CPM won 1). Karunanidhi alone won Harbour constituency and resigned his assembly seat in protest.
