Political Context, Seat Bargaining & Legislative Impact (1996)
The 1996 election produced the greatest tidal wave in Tamil Nadu's political history. G. K. Moopanar revolted against the Congress high command's decision to align with Jayalalithaa and founded the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC). Moopanar joined hands with M. Karunanidhi's DMK and the CPI, bolstered by superstar Rajinikanth's legendary declaration that 'even God cannot save Tamil Nadu if AIADMK returns to power.' The alliance won 220 out of 234 seats with 53.77% of the vote. DMK won 173 seats, TMC won 39 of 40 seats, and CPI won 8 seats. Jayalalithaa lost her own seat in Bargur.
