Political Context, Seat Bargaining & Legislative Impact (1989)

Following MGR's passing in December 1987, AIADMK fractured into two rival factions led by J. Jayalalithaa and MGR's widow V. N. Janaki Ramachandran. In the four-cornered election between DMK, AIADMK-Jayalalithaa, Congress (led by G. K. Moopanar), and AIADMK-Janaki, the DMK front swept to a decisive victory. DMK won 150 seats on its own, and ally CPM won 15 seats. M. Karunanidhi was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after 13 years in opposition.
