Political Context, Seat Bargaining & Legislative Impact (1977)
The 1977 election was the first after the Emergency and the dismissal of Karunanidhi's ministry under President's Rule in 1976. In a four-cornered fight between AIADMK, DMK, Congress, and the Janata Party, MGR's newly formed AIADMK stormed to power with 130 seats. DMK secured 48 seats with 24.89% vote share, becoming the principal opposition party. This election cemented the bipolar Dravidian hegemony between DMK and AIADMK.
